Relationships to Atherosclerosis

چکیده
A high Intake of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol Is associated with a high Incidence of occluslve arterial lesions Involving both atherosclerosis and thrombosis. The evidence Is based on epidemiological, experimental, and clinical studies. Such dietary habits Increase serum low density llpoproteln cholesterol, a main risk factor for atherosclerosis. The mechanisms by which dietary saturated fatty acids are connected to arterial thrombogenesls are only partly known. Experimental and epidemiological studies also Indicate an association between dietary saturated fatty acids and venous thrombosis; however, the chain of evidence lacks documentation from prospective clinical studies. When unsaturated fatty acids of the (n-9), (n-6), or (n-3) families replace saturated fatty acids In the diet, risk factors related to atherosclerosis may be reduced and the development of atherosclerosis, Inhibited. This potential Is related both to the reduction of saturated fatty acids and, In varying degrees, to the Individual unsaturated fatty acids. The very long-chain fatty acids of the (n-3) family and probably also llnolelc acid of the (n-6) family have the potential to inhibit thrombogenesls. In this respect, the effect of the Individual fatty acids seems even more Important To obtain an optimal dietary llpid composition for the prevention of atherosclerosis and thrombosis, It Is Important to appreciate the metabolic and structural effects of the Individual fatty acids. The Interaction between the various dietary fatty acids and their effects on llpid biosynthesis Is still only partly known. The present nutritional recommendations include a low Intake of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol and a balanced content of the unsaturated fatty acids and represent a well-documented approach to the prevention of both processes. Factors associated with carotid Intima media thickness and carotid plaque score in community-dwelling and non-diabetic individuals
BACKGROUND The carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque score (cPS) are respective markers of early and late stage subclinical atherosclerosis. Relationships between some laboratory parameters and subclinical atherosclerosis are not yet clear in community dwelling individuals and non-diabetic subjects, so we try to elucidate these relationships and find a model to predict early ...

Female cynomolgus monkeys, a previously established model of carotid and coronary artery atherosclerosis, were used to study the relationships between potential risk factors and carotid artery atherosclerosis. Over a 24-month treatment period, one-third of the monkeys (n = 25) were given the oral contraceptive Ovral, one-third of the monkeys (n = 26) were given the oral contraceptive Demulen, a...

The applicability of Cohn's method number 10 to the study of dog plasma has made possible this investigation of experimental canine atherosclerosis. Administration of thiouracil which causes hypercholesterolemia but no atherosclerosis in dogs produces no considerable alteration in the distribution of plasma lipoproteins. High cholesterol feeding and administration of thiouracil causes both athe...
متن کاملConcept of Atherosclerosis Velocity: Is It a Better Measure of Cardiovascular Risk?
In most cases atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of vascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke. It is believed that endothelial injury is the earliest change in the artery wall and that this precedes the formation of lesions of atherosclerosis. Recent developments in the field of atherosclerosis have led to a renewed interest in the recognition of the parameter of time in the at...
متن کاملHeme Oxygenase-2 Gene Mutations and Blood Bilirubin Level in Iranian Patients with Premature Atherosclerosis
Heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2) is a critical antioxidative stress enzyme found in endothelial cells and adventitialnerves. This enzyme in conjunction with other HOs (1 and 3) metabolize heme molecule into ferrous iron, carbon monoxide (CO), and biliverdin which is further converted to bilirubin. Both biliverdin and bilirubin arepotent antioxidants, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis...
